Interwar Bungalow Porch House W/ Arts & Crafts Influences

No 72 Oakover Street is a single storey house constructed in painted brick and rendered brick house with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Inter-War Porch style. It is asymmetrically composed with a gable bay and a part width skillion roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on stout piers. A limestone balustrade frames a porch area. The verandah roof extends over the gable bay. The gable bay features a bay window. The entry door is located on the north elevation under the porch. The roofscape features a rendered chimney.

HISTORY

1930 Daisy Filmer, 72 Oakover-street, East Fremantle.—”I am writing to thank you for the nice book which you sent me. I have started to read it, and 1 am enjoying it very much. I got a surprise to find I had won the prize. I didn't get it till Wednesday, so I couldn't write to thank you till today. I was glad to see my letter in the paper yesterday when we got it. Isn't it wet today? I would like very much to have Audrey Letch for a pen-friend. I am enclosing 6d for the cot fund. Our sweetpeas are coming out, not mine, but mummy's, and they do look pretty when a lot are out. This is all the news I have at present, so I will close with love to you and your Sunshiners.'' It was decided at Fremantle yesterday to form two committees to discuss proposals to convert the historic Roundhouse into a museum, with emphasis on nautical links with the early history of the State. Situated on Arthur's Head at the end of busy High-street, the Roundhouse was built in 1831 and is the oldest public building in the State. During the meeting, Mr. Samson produced a 150-year-old ivory marlin spike which had been sent for the proposed museum by Mr. Arthur Dannatt, of Oakover-street, East Fremantle. (reference)
