ARCHITECTURE

Inter-War, Bungalow Porch House

No 35 Dalgety Street is a single storey house constructed in roughcast rendered brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Inter-War California Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with an offset gabled entry porch. The porch is set on paired timber posts. There is an offset front door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and a casement window. There is a set of casement windows protected by a tiled sunhood. The roofscape features a rendered chimney. Originally the lower walls were face brick and the upper walls roughcast render. The lower walls have been rendered.

1941 Embossed Cloque. The lovely ivory satin, used for the bridal gown worn by Miss Aleix Marie (Jimmie) Carlson for her wedding to Maurice Albert Cairnie, was a gift from the bride's aunt and the material is twenty years old. The frock was designed with uplift bodice and swathed hipline, forming a bustle at the back. She wore a top-knot to hold her veil in place, and carried gladioli and roses. The bride is the youngest daughter of Mr. O. Carlson, of Ord-street, Fremantle, and the groom the only son of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Cairnie, of Dalgety-street, East Fremantle. (reference)

The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with thrust gable bay and a half timbered gabled entry porch. The porch is set on paired timber posts that rest on masonry piers. The half timbered gable bay features a set of casement windows under a sunhood. There is central door flanked by casement windows. The roofscape features a brick chimney.

No 37 Dalgety Street -‘Corindhap’- is a single storey house constructed in tuck pointed brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gabled tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a full width return hipped roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with post brackets. There is a tall half-timbered gable with rough cast render over the front rooms. The front facade features a lead light casement window and a corner suite window. The entrance door is on the north elevation under the return verandah. The roofscape features rendered chimneys.

1931 The South Fremantle Ladies' Hockey Club held another very enjoyable outing last Sunday, about 90 enthusiastic young people filling three lorries which journeyed to Serpentine. The event of the day was a hockey match-Boys v. Girls. The boys say they won by 3-2, but the girls know different. 1932 East Fremantle Football Club -Various toasts were honored during the evening and many sterling tributes were paid to the service given the club by the late Mr. H. L. Reilly, who died recently. He was vice-president. The adoption of the report was moved by Mr. W. H. Kitson, M.L.C., who pointed out that, socially, and from the administrative standpoint, as well as on the playing field, East Fremantle had proved a splendid model...The president referred to the death of Mr. Reilly and members stood in silence as a mark of respect. No 38 Dalgety Street is a single storey house constructed in tuck pointed brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and a part width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with post brackets. A vertical timber balustrade runs between the posts. The verandah terminates at a thrust bay on both ends. The half-timbered gable bays feature sets of three casement windows and sunhood.

HISTORY

John Hart (1887 - 1961) operated a mechanics and garage at 91 Canning Highway East Fremantle from 1926- 1960s. He married Minetta Ermyntrude Acton/Smith in 1927.

No 39 Dalgety Street is a single storey house constructed in rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. The building was originally an expression of the Art Deco style. It has since been modified with Federation Bungalow style influences. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust bay and a part width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with post brackets. The verandah extends over the thrust bay to act as a sun hood. It has also been extended to the south to form a carport. The original verandah on the north side of the house has been removed. The thrust bay features a set of casement windows. There is a central door flanked by a set of casement windows. Original windows have been replaced with casement and fixed lights. Walls were rendered at a later date. The roofscape features rendered chimneys and finials.

1943 The Late E. Fletcher. The death occurred yesterday of Edmund Fletcher, who had been actively associated with the turf in this State over a great number of years. Hailing originally from Victoria, where he had a good deal of success as a trainer, he raced many horses on Perth courses prior to going to the goldfields a little over 25 years ago. Returning to Fremantle with a smart sprinter named Green Baron, he won several races with that gelding. Later he raced Brownface and Flaming Star. With Brownface he won the Goldfields Newmarket in 1927 and with Flaming Star he won the Hannans Handicap in 1932. The last horse to carry his colours was Gunga Das, who in addition to winning races on the flat was also a successful hurdler. Of a quiet, unassuming nature, he had a wide circle of friends who will regret his passing. (reference)

The question of whether the supply of sedative and hypnotic drugs of the barbiturate group should be controlled was keenly debated by a number of doctors and chemists at an inquest in Perth Courthouse this week… Chemist John Geoffrey Skeahan and dispenser John Gunning considered that prescriptions should be marked with the number of times they were to be repeated and the number of times they had been repeated. No 40 Dalgety Street is a single storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Inter-War California Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a gable thrust bay and a part width gable verandah. The verandah features a broad arch carried on battered piers. There is a central front door flanked by casement windows. The thrust bay features casement windows under a sunhood. Face brickwork is to sill height and the upper walls are rendered. A checkerboard band runs at wall plate height. To the north there is an integral garage with a curved parapet.

Federation Bungalow and Federation Free Classical

No 41 Dalgety Street is a single storey shop and attached house. The place is constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the both the Federation Free Classical style (shop) and Federation Bungalow style (house). 
The shop has a corner entrance with a pair of three panel doors. The door is flanked on each street frontage by timber framed display windows. There is a suspended skillion roofed canopy over these openings. A rendered parapet wall extends above the canopy and features an entablature that includes dentils. The masonry has been painted. The roofscape features a rendered chimney.

HISTORY

1938 The Late Mr. Bernard McCloskey, storekeeper, of East Fremantle, died at his residence, 41 Dalgety-street, East Fremantle, on Tuesday last and the funeral took place yesterday morning at Fremantle Cemetery, where the remains were interred in the Roman Catholic portion… Mr. McCloskey. who was born at Claudy, Co. Derry, Ireland in 1864, came to Australia when 21 years of age, and spent 10 years in Melbourne before coming to Western Australia. On arriving in this State he settled in Fremantle and had resided there for the past 42 years. He entered the service of the Gaols Department in 1895 and rose to the rank of principal warder, from which he retired after 26 years' service. He then took an extended trip to his homeland and on his return commenced business on his own account as a grocer in Dalgety-street, East Fremantle. He also purchased the wholesale Jute and Bag Store, trading under the name of Whitford and Co., Henry-street, Fremantle, and he was actively interested in both enterprises until the end of last year, when ill-health compelled his retirement. He was a prominent friendly society member and was a past district president for this State of the H.A.C.B.S., with which he was closely and actively associated for 53 years. Mr. McCloskey was of genial and charitable disposition, and his quiet and unobtrusive support of many worthy causes afforded him a great deal of satisfaction, and he will be sadly missed. Mr. McCloskey was also well known in the Hines Hill district where he had farming interests for some years. He leaves a wife, one son, one daughter and three grandchildren to mourn their loss. No 52 Dalgety Street is a single storey house constructed in rendered brick with a hipped tiled roof. It is a fine and eclectic expression of the Inter-War Art Deco style. Its key feature is a flat roofed entry porch on the corner. The porch is supported on Tuscan columns surmounted by a decorative gable. The front door is located on the corner and set deep in an alcove within stepped reveals. The remaining walls have casement and fixed light windows. The window on the north elevation has a flat roofed sunhood. The roofscape features a rendered chimney.
