Interwar California Bungalow
No 66 Oakover Street is a single storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick house with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Inter-War California Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust bay and a gable roofed porch. The porch is supported on square columns set on piers. A brick and steel balustrade spans between the piers. The half-timbered thrust bay features a set of casement windows under a sunhood. There is a central door flanked by a set of casement windows. The roofscape features a rendered chimney.
HISTORY
1941 Death of Hansen, Pte. R.O., killed in action, September 14, dearly beloved son of Frances and Alf Hansen, 66 Oakover-street, East Fremantle, brother of Mrs. F. Dwyer (Possie), Onslow, Alf (H.M.A.S. Perth), Betty and Georgina; aged 19 years. Our Bob. God's Will be done. (reference)
1941 Bereavement Notice. Mr and Mrs. A. Hansen and Family of 66 Oakover-street, East Fremantle wish to thank all kind relatives and friends for letters, telegrams, cards and personal expressions of sympathy extended to them in the sad loss of their beloved son and brother, Pte. 1943 Taken Prisoner In Sea Battle. Stoker Alfred J. Hansen went to Jamaica to join H.M.A.S. Perth, was one of the survivors when the Perth was sunk in the Battle of Java. He is now a prisoner of war in Japanese hands. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Hansen, of 66 Oakover Street, East Fremantle, received a postcard from Alfred last week with the news that he was not wounded and in excellent health. Stoker Hansen is 22. He joined the Navy in 1939, served on the Perth through the Crete period. His only brother, Bob, was killed in action at Tobruk in September, 1941. (reference)
1944 Engagement. The engagement is announced of Betty, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Hansen, of 66 Oakover-street, East Fremantle, to Albert Edward (RAN, overseas), youngest son of Mr. and the late Mrs F. J. Crandell, of Mullumbinby, NSW. (reference)
1945 Fever. Perth survivor. Stoker A. J. Hansen, in a letter to his mother, Mrs F. Hansen of 66 Oakover Street, East Fremantle, says that fever has been the main trouble in his camp. He has been flown to Siam. (reference)
1945 Tobruk Victim's Brother Freed. Woman who lost a son in Tobruk has received word that her other son had been freed from a Japanese prison camp. She is Mrs F. Hansen of 66 Oakover Street, Fremantle. She received a cable yesterday from her son, Stoker Alfred J. Hansen saying that he is safe in India. Son lost in Tobruk was Private Robert Hansen, of the 2/28th Battalion. Stoker Hansen was on H.M.A.S. Perth when it was sunk, was posted missing. Eight months later his mother was informed that he was a prisoner of war. Now 25, Stoker Hansen was educated at Fremantle Boys' School. (reference)
1946 Marriage Postponed. Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Hansen, of 66 Oakover street, East Fremantle, regret to announce that the wedding of their daughter Betty and A./B. A. E. Crandell, which was to have taken place on Saturday, April 20, has now been postponed until further notice owing to cancellation of leave. (reference)
