Interwar Diagonal Plan Porch House Bungalow w Federation Influences
No 19 Oakover Street is a single storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. The place is located on a corner lot that addresses both Oakover Street and Millenden Street. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust gable bay and a part width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber post with a timber frieze. The verandah is a replacement. A gable roof is located on the south side of the verandah. The half-timbered gable features a pair of double hung sash windows under a sunhood. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and a pair of double hung sash windows. The roofscape features render capped chimneys.
HISTORY
In 1916-1917 Cecil James Kernick (b NSW 1893-1957) was an assistant draper living at 222 South Terrace, Fremantle. In 1917 he married Alma Jenkins (1893-1980). Daughter Rona A Kernick was born in Fremantle on 18 August 1920 and she married Archibald John Sexton. Cecil and Alma are both buried together in Fremantle Cemetery.
Cecil continued to work as a draper and enlisted in the B884 Army Citizen Military Forces during WWll. Leslie Ernest Kernick, a carpenter, lived at the house in 1937. They were still living at 19 Oakover st in 1954 (postal directories)
Rona passed away on 28 May 1996 in Narrogin WA.
1935 Funeral. The Late Mrs. Caroline Jenkins. The funeral of the late Mrs. Caroline Jenkins, of 19 Oakover-street, East Fremantle, widow of the late Mr. William James Jenkins; formerly of Fremantle, took place in the Methodist portion of the Fremantle Cemetery yesterday afternoon. (reference)
1936 Cyclist Knocked Down. Motorist Fails to Stop. When a motor car struck the back wheel of her bicycle while she was riding east along Fremantle-road, East Fremantle, last night, Roma Alma Kernick (16), of 19 Oakover-street, East Fremantle, was flung into the centre of the road.The motorist failed to stop after the accident. Luckily the girl was unhurt by the fall, although somewhat dazed. The sound of the impact was heard about 50 yards away. (reference)
1942 Silver Wedding Anniversary. On November 3, 1917, at Wesley Church, Fremantle, by the Rev Corly Butler, Cecil James, third son of the late Mr. and Mrs. E. Kernic, of Kalgoorlie, to Alma, only daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. Jenkins, of Fremantle. Present address, 19 Oakover-street, East Fremantle. (reference)
