a Brief History of glyde street

Glyde Street was named after Glyde Pearse- the Pearse family who first owned the Plymton area land. The first road for which a contract was let in East Fremantle was that in Glyde-street. (reference). Glyde Street was part of the suburban residential development associated with the expansion of East Fremantle during the Goldrush period of the 1880s and 1890s.

Mr. Frank G. Peterson, of 78 Glyde-street, East Fremantle, was born in Sweden and came to West Australia on the barque Matilda . He erected the first house in Glyde-street and had lived there until his death in 1931. His widow Mrs. Marie Sophia Peterson lived in the house for 42 years until 1936. Their house is now the Glyde-Inn Community Centre.

Many ship wrights, captains and ship builders lived in this street.
