ARCHITECTURE

Federation / Domestic Carpenter w Georgian Influences

No. 82 (previously was no. 158) King street is a single storey cottage constructed in timber framing and weatherboard cladding with an ‘M’ format corrugated iron roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style with later modifications. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and double hung sash windows. The facade features a full width bullnosed verandah supported on turned timber posts.

HISTORY

1905 Death on June 15, at 158 King-street, East Fremantle, Gertrude Alice, the dearly beloved daughter of Fred and Harriett Preston; aged 18 months. Deeply mourned.. (reference)

AIF 1915, Frederick Henry Preston (Regimental number 2691) Labourer , 82 King St, Age at embarkation 22. Next of kin father Frederick Preston, Unit embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia, on board HMAT A23 Suffolk on 13 October 1916.  NAA Record AIF Record 

1917 Mr. and Mrs. F. Preston, of 158 King-street, East Fremantle, have received word that their son, Private F. H. Preston (Mick) is in the Bethnal Green Hospital, suffering from gunshot wounds in the legs. Private Preston saw service at Gallipoli. (reference)

1918 Death on March 21, at No. 158 King-street, East Fremantle, Harriet Matilda, dearly beloved wife of Fred Preston and mother of Florence Mary, Frederick Henry, Francis Edward Hilda Jane, John Robert, and Alfred James Preston, aged 51 years. (reference)

1923 Death on July 13 at the Fremantle Hospital, John Robert, dearly beloved son of Fred. and the late Harriet Matilda Preston, and brother of Harry, Frank, James, and Florence Preston, and Mrs. V. Walker, of Driffield, 158 King-street, East Fremantle; aged 22 years. (reference)

1924 The friends of Mr. Frederick Preston, of the Ways and Works Department, W.A. Government Railways, are respectfully invited to follow the remains of his late dearly beloved son, Francis Edward Preston (late A.I.F.) to the place of interment, the Presbyterian Cemetery, Fremantle. The Funeral will leave his late residence, 'Driffield’ 158 King-street, East Fremantle. (reference)

1924 The funeral of the late Mr. Francis Edward Preston, formerly of the A.I.F., took place on Wednesday, the 8th instant, and was very largely attended. Deceased, who was only 26 years of age, was born at Footscray, Victoria, but he had resided in this State for the last 24 years. He succumbed on the 6th inst., from injuries received in a motor accident on the same day. The long funeral cortege moved from his late residence, 158 King-street, East Fremantle, and proceeded to the local cemetery, where the remains were interred in the Presbyterian portion. (reference)

1930 Death on April 14, at the Fremantle Hospital, Fred, husband of the late Harriett Matilda Preston, of 158 King-street, East Fremantle, loving father of Florrie, Harry, Hilda (Mrs. F. Walker) and Jim Preston, and father-in-law of Ada (Mrs. F. H. Preston); aged 64 years. (reference)

1930 An old resident of Fremantle, in the person of Mr. Fred Preston, passed away on April 14. The deceased, was born in Yorkshire, England, and at an early age came to Australia, first to Brisbane Queensland. He afterwards spent some time in New Zealand, and later in Melbourne, Victoria. He came to Western Australia 33 years ago. and had resided in East Fremantle ever since. He was connected with the W.A. Government Railways, Ways and Works Department all the time he was in this State, and he won the respect and esteem of all with whom he became associated. The funeral cortege moved from his late residence, 158 King-street, East Fremantle, and proceeded to the Fremantle Cemetery, where the remains were Interred in the Presbyterian portion. (reference)

1952 Death on Sept. 5, at Fremantle, Catherine McGiffin of 82 King-street, East Fremantle, widow of the late William McGiffin, mother of the late Kathleen (Mrs. Weldon) and fond aunt of Elizabeth and William Rule and family: aged 90 years. (reference)
