Federation / Simple Federation Bungalow
No 55 Petra Street is a single storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a full width return skillion roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with post brackets. The verandah has been extended north to act as a carport. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and sets of casement windows with hopper lights. The roofscape features a pair of tall rendered chimneys.
History
1946 Little Boy Killed—Run Over by Truck. Perth, Oct. 21.—Run over by a truck this afternoon Murray John McMiles (4), of 47 Egham road, Victoria Park, was killed, probably instantly. The truck driver rushed him to a hospital in Belmont, where he was found to be dead. About 3.30 p.m. Joseph William Scaddan, of 55 Petra street, East Fremantle, parked a truck beside the road in Victoria Park close to the intersection of Howick street while he made some deliveries at the corner shop. As he left the shop, he told Traffic Constable G. Pettersson, he noticed some children, including McMiles who was on a tricycle, playing on the footpath. He entered his truck and had moved about 18 ft. when he heard a child cry out, so he stopped immediately. On looking back he found that a boy was lying on the road and that the truck had apparently run over his head. Scadden at once rushed him to a hospital in Belmont but the boy was dead. (reference)
