History
1938 A Seaman’s Death. Struck by Falling Timber. At an inquest held in the Fremantle Courthouse yesterday on the death of Percy Humphrey (about 28), a seaman from the liner Ormonde, the Acting-Coroner (Mr. W. F. Samson, J.P.) found that Humphrey had died at the Fremantle Hospital on May 30 from injuries received when he was accidentally struck by some timber which fell from a sling while the Ormonde was berthed at Victoria Quay… Evidence of identification was given by Arthur Styles, foreman stevedore, of 37 Petra-street, East Fremantle. Witness said that he was near No. 2 hatch on the deck of the Ormonde on May 30. Fruit was being loaded, and pieces of timber, known as unnage, were also brought on board to place between the cases of fruit and the flooring. At 11.40 a.m., witness asked the hatchman to bring a sling of dunnage on to the ship from the wharf. Several seamen were standing on the deck with witness, and he warned them about the timber. Some men were handling a trolley of sand, and when the sling of dunnage grazed a stay, witness called, "Look out!" Two men left the trolley and stood in a safe place, but Humphrey tripped over the trolley and was struck by about seven pieces of timber... (reference)
